Save Duke!

from Ask Chewie: The Pug Life

Chewie update on Duke the Bulldog in Hempstead

Yesterday on Myspace, I posted a last minute plea to e-mail and call in support Duke the Bulldog in Hempstead Long Island. Here are some updates. I will try to post as they become available. *snort*

Newsday Story

June 1 Local Newsday Story

If you don’t know the story of Duke—he was a bulldog that was caught up in a Dog Bite incident with two other dogs…Here are the details:

Stay Extened Pending Judge’s Decision June 1, 2006
Demonstration in Front of
Hempstead Town Hall
tonight, May 31 at 6PM
One Washington Street
Hempstead, NY 11550
(516) 489-5000

Who’s Duke?
A one-year old little English Bulldog Puppy.

Why will he be killed?
His owner, Lawrence Kelly, let him run loose with two Rottweilers who bit a little boy. This terrible thing happened on April 28. Kelly gave the Town of Hempstead ownership of all his dogs so they could kill them. The Town of Hempstead is charging Kelly with three counts of having an unleashed dog and three counts of having unlicensed dogs. Kelly pleaded not guilty. He will receive justice in court.

Why do the Nassau SPCA, Long Island Bulldog Rescue, and thousands of Long Islanders including many people from Nassau County and Hempstead, in particular—want to stop Duke’s execution?
It is not clear that Duke bit. Bulldogs are calm, gentle dogs that get along with everyone. They are patient and loving with children. They are not property protectors. (ASPCA, 1999, p. 136.)
Long Island Bulldog Rescue (LIBR) and Nassau SPCA want justice for Duke, too. They have asked that an unbiased, expert dog temperament evaluator test Duke AT NO COST TO THE TOWN OR COUNTY to see if he has the temperament to live a safe, happy life. If so, Nassau SPCA and LIBR assures he would be placed out of New York State, AT NO COST TO THE TOWN OR COUNTY.

Who should care?
Every person who:
Owns a pet in Hempstead or Nassau or anywhere. Could your pet be next if your neighbor accuses him or her?
Lives in Nassau or Hempstead and everywhere. Could you be next if your neighbor accuses you?
Believes that our country, county, and town are strong because we are ...
compassionate and fair, not because we are cruel and unfair.
Knows that the Town of Hempstead has been a progressive precedent- setting leader in many areas and wants that tradition to go forward.

Why does Duke’s life or death matter to every Hempstead and Nassau County resident?
o Duke could have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time. Nassau County, and Hempstead, should be the right place at every time, so all residents are safe from being punished for something they didn’t do.
o A society is judged by the way it handles those least able to take care of themselves. Duke can’t take care of himself. His family neglected and abandoned him. Hempstead and Nassau residents don’t blame or punish babies and puppies for the actions of adults.
o Dogs have a long tradition of saving people. Here’s our chance to return the favor.

Nassau County is a place where people come to live the American dream. It takes teamwork to make the dream work. Keep that dream alive. Promote justice for Duke. TELL THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD SUPERVISOR AND COUNCIL MEMBERS THAT DUKE THE ENGLISH BULLDOG PUPPY DESERVES THE CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF. GRANT LI BULLDOG RESCUE STANDING TO ADVOCATE FOR DUKE TO HAVE HIM TESTED. If he is dangerous, he will be destroyed. If he is not dangerous, someone outside New York State will adopt him and give him a safe, happy life.

1. Call and e-mail Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town Council

Politely tell them that you demand Duke be temperament tested, and to stop wasting tax payers money on fighting to kill him.

Puggles

from Ask Chewie: The Pug Life

Chewie the pug weighs in on the Puggle debate

image
I have long been saying that while Puggles, and Pugadoos, and Bug Pugs, Pugaranians, and all the other Pug Mixes are fine and I love them all like they are pure breed pugs. (Just like I love all things like they are pure breed pugs.) I do not agree with paying ridiculous prices for a mutt, a crossbreed, a hybrid, or whatever you want to call then. They are not worth the extra cost, because someone labels them DESIGNER.

I read this article a while back, but want to provide a link to it for all those seeking Puggles, for the sake of having a hip, trendy dog. http://www.pugs.org/Puggles.htm

“If you want a crossbreed – go to your local shelter or call an all breed rescue. They are chock full of dogs waiting for good homes. If you want a Pug, buy a Pug. If you want a Beagle, buy a Beagle. “

If you are buying a dog to be a pet, then I say you should buy a dog based on love. I don’t care where you buy it from or who. YOu love that dog and will give it a good home, do it. Even if it is a pet store in a mall (be prepared for some health issues in many cases), or your neighbor Sally’s house, or whatever. If you plan to show or breed (be committed and do your research please) then buy a pedigreed purbred genetically wonderful dog and have at it. But please don’t buy into a trend just because the NY Post tells ya to. Be a responsible pet owner and buyer.

Okay, read da article please *snort*

Pug News:delaware state pug

from Ask Chewie: The Pug Life

Chewie barks arund the net. Delaware could name a state dog: and its a pug!

Mah new friends Zelda and Buffy besides having great names turned me on to this story about Delaware’s state dog.

Seems a republican from dat state thinks the pug should be the one and only state dog. I agree. *snort* That’s why I love republicans—they will never go against the main disciples of pug life: fun, relaxation, and pugs. You can drink all you want, smoke all you want, and golf all day if you want as long as you love a pug. *snort*

Here is da bill that mah MaMa found fer me to post: Delaware 143rd Assemble HOUSE BILL 420: This Act adopts the Pug as the official state dog.

Here is the highlites “WHEREAS, although long ago Delaware earned the designation as “A Small Wonder”, its size has not limited its contributions to the cultural development, economic growth, or historic beauty of our country throughout its history; and

WHEREAS, the Pug, whose breed motto is “Multum in Parvo” meaning “a lot of dog in a small space,” is considered among many to have a heart and soul of a canine many times its size; and”

so de pug becomes state dog. Maybe we should have a national dog. Mistah George W. Bush, so you like Pugs? and in case you wondering, I am not a republican, because I am a dog. I am registered pug life. so don’t ya go yelling at me.

LA Times and the Pug

from Ask Chewie: The Pug Life

The LA TIMES DECLARES PUGS THE HOTTEST DOG OF THE MOMENT

LA Times declared pugs the latest hot dog! Well, they are about nine years late. Frank the pug from Men in Black blew up the screen in 1997, so much a fad that he got a starring role in the sequel. Pugs have never been the same since. And neither has the pug life. My MaMa found me before that movie hit the screen, so I have been called “That Dog From Men in Black” for the last 9 years of my life. *snort* While the news tv I watch while MaMa is working and the New York papers I pee on declared the puggle the coolest dog of the moment, LA Times must be trying to bring back the pug to the reigning role. Go LA! *snort*
