Acupuncture

from Ask Chewie: The Pug Life

chewie the pug photo

At first I thought the lil alien had tricked mah mama to perform experiments on me, but then I started to feel good. This needle thing is pretty relaxing for the most part. I especially like Dr. Darla and Sophie the Barking Receptionist. I even got a little doggy massage, which mah MaMa used to give me lots more of before the lil alien arrived. Perhaps a heated bed and some kibble would complete the experience. I’ll work on that for next time!

From The Archives

from Ask Chewie: The Pug Life

Chewie the pug answers questions from his q&a page.

Since so many spammers attack mah speak page, I thought I’d answer this one on here. Now this is only from watching mah mama with the lil alien. I was never scared of anything, but the lil alien didn’t like door jams or stairs! I’m not a trainer, but these are things Mah MaMa did to get Le Mops over door jams into a house.

I have a 7 month old pug that is easily startled and has a hard time coming in from outside on it’s own.  She has difficulty in that she looks around cautiously and sniffs, retreats and comes back.  Sometimes, this takes about 10 minutes or more before she scrambles in.  Afterwards, she will refuse any doggie treats I give her and has an expression of worry, like she feels she is being punished, although my voice is light and full of praise.  Is there anything that can be done to help her develop confidence?  I have a pet door that she doesn’t use as just the sight of it startles her and she will not even go near it to sniff it out, so I resort to opening the entire door and leave it open until she has finished eliminating.

When a dog refuses food, she is really scared and should be helped! When the lil Alien was in agility training, he would get scared and after a minute of refusing food, he would get carried down. But then he would be forced to try again and again. It’s sometimes better to just help your puppy in rather than scare them! There is probably something about that door, besides the dog door that is scary like a metal door jam, stairs, who knows! Just know that as dogs get older, they get less fearful. Le Mops the Lil Alien didn’t go down stairs until he was almost a year old! He’d go up, but not down. Mah Mama would take him up every staircase she could find.

Building her confidence to got through the door will require some time and patience on your part. Will she follow you in, just not go through on your own? Then you should give her treats and praise her when she does that as well. When she is outside by herself, wait on the other side of the door and call her through, showing the treats immediately. Slowly get her used to coming in on her own. You can try creating a trail of treats. Sometimes you need a bigger treat that she can actually see, like a piece of sausage or something. If she’ll follow the treats, then place the treats further apart each time until she only needs one treat on the end. It’s good that she eventually does it now, so she’ll only need a little bit of confidence training. As she gets older, she’ll get less and less scared as she does it over and over again and nothing goes wrong. Even the lil alien was scared of the stairs once he started going up and down, but slowly the fear wore off and now he runs up and down them like a wild cat!
